| Don't be fooled by unlimited bandwidth |
Web hosting has gotten cheaper and cheaper lately with some hosts offering gigbytes of space and tens of gigabytes of bandwidth for under $3 per month. What many don't know is many of these
hosts are overselling their server. They are betting on the fact that most people will not use nearly all the resources that they purchase. This is not a bad bet as most people do not use
all the space and bandwidth that come with the account. However, overselling needs to be done in a careful fashion. Many hosts oversell too much and their clients end up on slow server with frequent outages.
When looking for a host, remember that "You Get What you Pay for". If you pay $3 for a plan, you will probably get $3 worth of hosting and service. To avoid hosts with extremely bad tech support and frequent server outages, webhostinggate
recommends you go with a host that sells at around $.50/(GIG of Bandwidth and 25mb space) ratio. These hosts are inexpensive and with that ratio the host can make a decent profit on his services to provide adequate tech support. Do not go for the hosts
offering 1GB space and 50GB bandwidth for $5. That is way overselling and there is a likely chances that you will end up on a slow server with unresponsive tech support.
Besides using price/space/bandwidth comparisons, also ask around in web hosting forums and look around in web hosting directories for reviews and ratings of the host you are thinking about. If the ratings and reviews are generally positive for the host, then you have probably got a winner.
